Tornak Hut, Sun Valley Idaho
Up a long skin track almost at the top of Tornak peak, where it gets its namesake, is Tornak Hut. Nestled against a group of trees for protection from the wind, Tornak Hut is a long wall-tent with big enough for groups of 12-15.
Run by Sun Valley Trekking, the Tornak Hut sits just outside of Sun Valley, you park on the side of the road and it’s a full-day skin in. It’s a long skin, steady uphill with no transitions. We opted to have our heavier gear portered to the hut for a fee, definitely worth it in our opinion.
The hut has plenty of access to day trips from camp, whether its the short skin up to the top of Tornak or down the glades right outside the hut.
Tornak Hut details:
Two wood-burning stove and propane cook setup
Bunk beds with space for 10-12
Drying lines for skins and gear
Water jug, metal strainer, and topo maps pinned to the walls
Tornak hut has some amenities that are actually semi-connected to the hut with a wooden walkway, running in your birthday suit to the sauna is a perk.
Amenity #1: The outhouse — Well placed between the sauna and the hut on a wooden walkway, it’s an easy trip for when nature calls
Amenity #2: The sauna — Further down the wooden walkway, the sauna has multiple levels allowing the whole group at once if you dare
We broke our days into a few different objectives and found some powder so good that we actually went back to the same spot a few times. Building a jump is required of course.
