Trip Report: Alpine Lakes High Camp

Alpine Lakes High Camp is a unique take on the traditional hut trip. Instead of being out with just your crew in a single yurt or hut, there is a small village of 9 huts and a central lodge spread out across a few acres, surrounded by vast stretches of wilderness. If camp is fully booked out, the stoke can be pretty high with upwards of 40 people frothing to get after it.

Our crew stayed in the Foxfire hut, which was the largest hut available, it can house up to 10 people, and comes with all the typical amenities that a backcountry hut has: Propane stove top for cooking, water containers, wood fired stove for heat, lines for drying skins, plates, cutlery, bowls, etc. All the huts in camp can be completely independent if you choose to not interact with the other campers.

On top of your hut, you also have access to main lodge - the main lodge features a much more spacious layout, running water (for filling your jugs), and of course pizza ovens. What else could you need besides a hot pie after a long day in the backcountry?

Camp also has 4 outhouses, and a very large, very nice, shared sauna that can fit 20 people if you pack it full.

Getting to camp you basically have to take the cat service offered by the owners. Or you can skin the 9 miles in, but the elevation gain is significant, and its a long windy forest road. In our opinion, the cat is well worth it, and part of the experience.

We got lucky on our trip and have insane conditions with 60+ inches being dropped the week before we arrived, the infamous line “too deep” was dropped a lot. The hut is surrounded by heavily wooded terrain, and dense trees, so if you want to find true alpine conditions you need to skin 3 hours up to the alpine lakes, but it was definitely worth it to ride and enjoy the view above the treeline.

Some of the benefits or a High Camp experience compared to a traditional hut experience:

  • Don’t have to melt snow for water

  • Don’t have to chop your own wood

  • Established skin tracks heading out of camp

  • Marked runs and signposts near camp

TLDR - its a great trip for a quick weekend reset in the backcountry, and if you get the right conditions can be a season highlight.
